I am currently out of town working on a writing project separate from this website, and I haven’t had the amount of time I thought I would to write today’s post. So, as a result, I’m beginning another fun-filled daily theme…WACKY WEDNESDAY!
I’ll throw these in from time to time, as the need or inspiration arises.
Today, I present to you a simple cartoon a friend shared with me. I found it mildly amusing. Mostly though, I found it spiritually intriguing.
Here it is:
Check out the man with the hat. Wishing the other man a good day, even tipping his hat to him, all the while oblivious to the other man’s imminent peril.
This is a cartoon that was published originally in a business journal, intended to provide a social commentary.
To me, though, it has a spiritual message.
How often do we make small talk with other people and yet don’t really care what their answer is or what is really going on behind the scenes?
“Hey, John, how are you?” you might ask.
“Fine,” John might reply. ”Everything’s just dandy.”
This happens hundreds or thousands of times every Sunday in every church in America. A token, “How are you?” and an even more token, “I’m fine.”
Meanwhile, most of us are walking around broken, distraught, lost, empty, and hurting, and our so-called “friends” don’t really care, or at least they don’t care enough to warn us of the manhole we are about to fall into.
Friends, our faith is about way more than wishing our neighbor a “good day,” tipping our caps, and moving on our way. It’s about loving them as Christ loved us. It’s about being a living sacrifice, a shining light, and a Good Samaritan.
The same holds true in our marriages. Are you practicing Manhole Theology with your spouse? Or, are you genuinely loving the one God gave you as He commanded you in the book of Ephesians.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church…” (Ephesians 5:25)
“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord…” (Ephesians 5:22)
